Ashton School is a co-educational Church of Ireland secondary school situated in Cork, Ireland. It was founded in 1972, following the merger of the Cork Grammar School and Rochelle School. Ashton School has more than 500 pupils.
The Chaplain
The Chaplain’s role is to be a supportive and caring presence in the school, committed to Christian values, and accompanying the individual and the school community on their journey. The chaplain has a special responsibility in times of crisis – death, bereavement or family crisis – and will support both the individual and peers at such times.
The chaplain will seek to maintain sacred space in the school, both in terms of time and place, to allow for personal and spiritual growth. The Chaplain maintains contact between school and church, liaising with local clergy in an ecumenical context.
Assemblies are organised to develop the sense of community, stimulate the pursuit of ideals, give expression to faith issues and celebrate achievements.
The Chaplain is also head of Religious Education and teaches some Religion classes.
The Chapel
A Service of Thanksgiving celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the St. Andrew’s Chapel took place on 30th November, 2018.
The chapel was Dedicated to the Glory of God on St. Andrew’s Day, 1988 by the Bishop of Cork, Cloyne and Ross Right Reverend R. Warke.
As part of the restoration of Ashton House, the chapel was refurbished. New altar furniture, a piano and new glassware and linens were purchased. A cross and plaque mount was made from the wood taken from the old Communion table. Wall hangings were designed and made by students.
The Chapel was rededicated to the Glory of God on 25th April, 2016 by the Right Reverend Dr. Paul Colton, Bishop of Cork, Cloyne and Ross.
Holy Communion is celebrated twice a month on Thursday mornings and other liturgical services affirm the students in prayer and convey Christian faith.
The Chaplain supports a very active Christian Union which meets weekly on Friday lunchtimes. Through enthusiasm and dedicated leaders, the group has grown to over 30 students who attend each Friday lunch break. Ashton CU has a band who play at worship and passionate leaders who bring their experiences and thoughts to the students on a weekly basis. Guest speakers are invited to share with us at special events such as ‘Curry Night’.
