The Model School, Dunmanway, a small school founded in 1848, is unusual in that its Patron is The Minister for Education and Skills rather than The Bishop of Cork, Cloyne and Ross. However, since local Church of Ireland schools have been amalgamated into it, a large proportion of students are of protestant ethos. They come from the Dunmanway, Drinagh and Coolkelure catchment areas.
The school was established along with 25 other ‘model schools’ around Ireland to exemplify a high standard of educational practice and to begin the training process for teachers. After some years as monitors in the Model the trainees would go to Marlborough Street in Dublin for 6 months to complete the course and become qualified. Also attached was an agricultural department and farm complete with trial plots.
We still try to provide a high standard of education in West Cork and help all our pupils to meet their potential academically, socially, emotionally, physically and spiritually. We want our children to be happy in our school while learning what they need in order to be happy and fulfilled in later life too.
