Ashton Chaplaincy

The Chaplain’s role is to be a supportive and caring presence in the school, committed to Christian values, and accompanying the individual and the school community on their journey. The chaplain has a special responsibility in times of crisis – death, bereavement or family crisis – and will support both the individual and peers at such times.

The chaplain will seek to maintain sacred space in the school, both in terms of time and place, to allow for personal and spiritual growth.
In fulfilling this role, much time is spent in the corridors, in the staffroom and in various offices including the chaplain’s own, listening to and talking with students, teachers, principal, deputy and assistant principals, ancillary staff and parents. Assemblies are organised to develop the sense of community, stimulate the pursuit of ideals, give expression to faith issues and celebrate achievements. Holy Communion and other liturgical services affirm the students in prayer and convey Christian faith.

The Chaplain maintains contact between school and church, liaising with local clergy and youth officers in an ecumenical context.

The Chaplain is also head of Religious Education and teaches some Religion classes.
This involves working with the other RE teachers to decide upon policy, aims and objectives, books and teaching materials.

The Chaplain of Ashton is Drew Ruttle. He has been teaching at the school since 2001 and became chaplain in 2008. Drew can be contacted through the school on 021 4966044 or through email ashtonchaplain@yahoo.com
